The Co-operative Housing Association of Manitoba Inc. (CHAM) was formed on January 1, 1960 .  After seven years Willow Park housing Development was born. It was Canada 's first major co-operative housing venture through a community survey.

Nor' West became a reality in 1972 with 8 employees and a volunteer executive board…

February 1972 - Co-operative Housing Association of Winnipeg begins a health study in the North Winnipeg Area… designed to investigate availability and accessibility of health services…

Three main factors considered were:

1.Consumers of health services

2.Suppliers of health services

3.Care delivery systems


Among its recommendations a beginning should be made immediately to re-organize and integrate all North Winnipeg health services into a comprehensive and coordinated District Health Services System designed accordingly to the needs of the community.

October 1972 - Representatives of various co-operative organizations, labour organizations and interested citizens held an inaugural meeting and elected a provisional Board of Directors for the Nor' West Co-op Health and Social Services Centre Inc.

Application for incorporation as a co-operative without share capital was submitted through the Department of Co-operative Development and a Letters Patent received.

The objects of incorporation include the following:

1. To promote, design, develop, provide, maintain, and administer comprehensive programs of integrated health, social and related services, and programs of preventative health and social care.

2. To promote, design, develop, provide, maintain, and administer any service or services related to community betterment.


June 1973- First General Meeting of Nor' West held at Willow Centre at 61 Tyndall Avenue , Winnipeg In 2003 we have grown to 49 staff and now have variety of programs and services.
