NEW! Health and Wellness Information Sessions

Nor’ West on Alexander (1880 Alexander Ave) is running sessions the first Thursday of every month from 1:30 – 3:00 pm.  Each month a health professional guest speaker will discuss various topics related to overall health and well-being.

Get Better Together!
A program for living better with chronic disease. Tuesdays 5:30 - 8:00 pm starting March 10 - April 15, 2009 at Nor'West Co-op Community Health Centre (103-61 Tyndall Ave) in the boardroom.  Get Better Together! Is a free, research-based program for anyone who is sick and tired of being sick and tired! Come join us one evening a week to learn to manage your health condition better and cope with the challenges that health problems create in our lives.  Programs are 6 weeks long and are led by instructors who are also living with a health condition. Diabetes Information and Support Group
Drop in Tuesdays 5:00 - 6:30 pm at Nor’West Co-op Community Health Centre Boardroom. Learn about diabetes management and how to take care of yourself or a loved one.  Call Shannon at 940-2107 for more information.


Community Cookbook
Do you have a yummy recipe you would like to share with other Inkster residents?  We will be creating an Inkster Community Cookbook with recipes from community members.  Please submit your name with your recipe as we would like to recognize who submitted each recipe in the cookbook (this is optional). The recipes will be reviewed by a Registered Dietitian and may be slightly modified to be healthier.  Drop off your recipes at Nor'West on Tyndall, Nor'West on Alexander, Blake Gardens, or Gilbert Park Resource Centre. Your name will be entered into a draw to win a $25 Sobey's gift card. Contact Shannon at 940-2107 for more information.


Meal Bags
Looking for healthy meals that are easy and quick to make?  Each meal bag includes a recipe and all of the dry/canned ingredients to make that meal for 4-6 people.  All you need to do is add a few ingredients to complete the meal.  Meal bags are available at 4 different sites: Nor'West on Tyndall, Nor'West on Alexander, Blake Gardens and Gilbert Park Resource Centres. INKSTER CATERING PROJECT

Monday and Wednesday mornings starting February 2009 at Weston Memorial Community Centre (1625 Logan Avenue). Gain cooking, catering, budgeting skills, obtain a Food Handlers Certificate, gain Canadian work experience, meet people from different cultural backgrounds and earn a small amount of pocket money for catering local events. Triple P: Positive Parenting Program.
Are you a parent looking for simple strategies to address problem behaviour and prevent future problems from developing? This program helps parents create a stable, supportive & harmonious family environment.
Learn how to further build positive relationships with your children so that conflict can be resolved and you can take care of yourself as a parent! Session to begin on March 6 2009 at Noa, 1880 Alexander. 3:00- 5:00p.m. Don’t delay-sign up now! Call Natalie at 940-8511 to register.


Baby Talk

Wednesdays 10:00 am to noon at the Sir William Stephenson Library 765 Keewatin Avenue.  This is a drop-in group for parents and their babies, facilitated by community Public Health Nurses.  Come and have your baby weighed, meet other parents, learn about childcare, and have your baby questions answered. 


Healthy Start for Mom and Me

Groups  for mums and their  partners/ significant others are held on Thursdays from 1:30-3:30at Weston Memorial Community Centre located at 1625 Logan Ave.  The groups alternate each week between the prenatal group (for pregnant women) and the postnatal group (moms with their babies up to one year old).  A Healthy Start dietician, an outreach worker, and a Public Health Nurse (PHN) are present at all groups. Come and have your baby weighed, meet other parents, learn about healthy nutrition for all family, and have your baby questions answered. For more information call  Olga at 940-8360.

Gilbert Park Going Places is offering fun and exciting programs for children/youth in Gilbert Park. This new program has a five staff team - Fatima, Alexa, Amara, Krystal and Elizabete. The Various programs such as cooking, soccer, arts & crafts, sports and special projects such as computers and drama. Gilbert Park Going Places also offers life-skills and peer mentoring programs to help equip youth with skills for everyday life challenges. Weston Memorial Community Centre

Public skating sessions are one of our main attractions at Weston Memorial Community Centre Rink. Skating provides great exercise and an opportunity to get out of the house - plus, it's not like exercising at the gym... skating is fun! Lace-em- up and come join the others. Get on the ice and get ready for a great experience.

Keewatin Inkster Neighbourhood Resource Council for Seniors


The K-I-N-NECTOR continues to operate the last Friday of each month to Polo Park or another shopping mall (determined by the participants).  Cost is $2.00 for a return trip.  Pick up is between 10 and 10:30 am returning about 2pm.  Pick up locations include 1300 Aberdeen, 61 Tyndall, 1960 William and 97 Keewatin Street.  Other pick up locations can be arranged if requested.

Centre for Aboriginal Human Resource Development – Employment & job preparation services are now available Monday afternoons at the Gilbert Park Resource Centre. All are welcome.


Gilbert Park Going Places

If you haven’t heard about Going Places, now is your chance! Come meet Amana, Krystal, Alexa, Elizabete, and Fatima at 6-35 Gilbert Ave.  Gilbert Park Going Places includes after school activities for youth 10-14 years of age, as well as skill development programs, outings, peer helper training, one-on-one counselling, and more fun to come. Foot Care

Nor’West offers specialized nursing foot care free of charge to clients who can no longer care for their feet due to chronic conditions.  Locations in Inkster: Nor'West Co-op Community Health Centre, Weston Community Centre and Brooklands Senior Centre.  For more info on eligibility please call the Nor’West Footcare intake at 940-2141. 


Immigrant Settlement Services

Nor'West offers support to immigrant and refugee families who would like any assistance with settlement in Winnipeg.  We can help you find: employment, housing, English classes, training programs, childcare, and more.   Please call Emmy at call 940-1697.


Immigrant Women’s Counseling

Counseling is available for women who are newcomers to Canada.  Experiencing immigration, family violence or trauma can be overwhelming.  Help is available.  If you have questions about women’s rights in Canada or would like to make an appointment, call Jodie Penner 940-1682.  Interpreters can be arranged.
